The Happy Face
We learned early on that distributing free meals at extended stay motels was a new concept that was often met with skepticism. When we knocked on doors and tried to give out a sack lunch, people were hesitant to take it, questioning why we were giving away perfectly good food, and what we expected in return. It typically became a long, exhaustive conversation with us reiterating that “we just wanted to.”
To create an ice breaker, we switched to white paper bags and drew a colorful smiley face on each one. Since McDonald’s has graciously provided buns for the sandwiches from the start, we informally began referring to them as “Happy Meals.” As a result, when we knock on a door now, we present the colorful sack lunch and announce we are passing out “Happy Meals,” which seems to put people at ease and put a smile on their face!
